Diagnostic Value of CA72-4 in Colorectal Cancer

Abstract
As a novel tumor marker, CA72-4 has been found in serum, tissue, and body fluid of patients with carcinoma. To evaluate the diagnostic value of serum level of CA72-4 on colorectal cancer, serum CA72-4, CA19-9, and CEA were analyzed in 143
patients
with
either colorectal cancer(n=72) or in a control group with benign disease (n=71). Serum samples were drawn within a week before surgery. Serum CA72-4, CA19-9, and CEA was checked simutaneously at a same specimen. The percentage of patients whose
serum
sample was positive for CA72-4, CA19-3, or CEA was obtained according to pathologic stage and histologic differentiation. In our results, the sensitivity of CA72-4, CA19-9, and CEA was 18%, 21%, and 54% repectively. Statisticaly the presence of
positive
levels of CA72-4, had no correlation with pathologic stage or histologic differentiation. Only the presence of positive levels of CA72-4 tended to elevate in the advanced stages. CA72-4 had no marked benefit over the other tumor markers in the
diagnosis
of colorectal carcinoma.
